True masterpieces executed by the skilled painter and leading representative of Roman Neoclassicism, Tommaso Conca (Rome, 1734 - Rome 1822). Son of Giovanni Scarsella and nephew of Sebastiano Conca, he had the opportunity to train in his workshop, a thriving hub of artistic talents.
These are two small oil paintings on canvas for private devotion, one depicting the grieving Virgin, full of pathos and passion, and the other, more gentle and peaceful, depicting a Holy Family with the Virgin holding the blessing child. Both show the full qualities of the Campanian artist, but naturalized Roman, especially the drawing skill, a characteristic that distinguished him in Italian painting of the second half of the 18th century. No less evident is his way of coloring, balanced, delicate and with a soft brushstroke.
The canvases measure 20cm x 27cm in height.
The measurements inclusive of the exceptional typically Roman, gilded and finely carved frames are 33cm x 40 in height.
The works come from a historic palace in Perugia where it is known that Tommaso Conca was active as a fresco painter.
The paintings were viewed by Giancarlo Sestrieri who confirmed this attribution.
The paintings are visible at our antique gallery in Foligno, P.zza E. Giacomini, 42, (PG).
