Kern was born in Tetschen, where his father Johannes was the municipal secretary. His artistic talent first came to the attention of Laurentio di Rossi, an artist of Venetian origin who served as court painter in Saxony, while Kern attended the Jesuit school in Mariaschein. Rossi was sufficiently impressed to take him home to his studio in Dresden and give him lessons.
