Francesco Antonio Simonini (Parma, 1686-1766)
Military scene with the signing of a treaty, circa 1745
Oil on canvas, 151 x 224 cm.
Unpublished.
This military scene, centered on the signing of a treaty for the suspension of hostilities or the surrender of a besieged city, as can be seen from the description of the background, with artillery positions placed in special openings made on buttresses, near artificial mounds of earth, watched over by soldiers and on which flags are hoisted, constitutes an interesting new acquisition to Simonini's already substantial catalog. In fact, it brings together his specific peculiarities as a battle painter with those of a landscape painter, the latter of which continued to be cultivated even in his full maturity, often as a backdrop to military scenes, be they actual battles, or troop movements, encampments or episodes related to military campaigns… (see Giamblanco catalog 2015)
