Pocket watch from the prestigious manufacturer Vacheron & Constantin, circa 1908.
Vacheron Constantin is one of the oldest and most renowned watch manufacturers in the world, as well as the oldest in continuous production since its foundation. The House was founded on September 17, 1755, in the Saint-Gervais district of Geneva by watchmaker Jean-Baptiste-Marc Vacheron (1731-1805). Initially, the watchmaking atelier consisted of Jean-Marc and an apprentice. In 1785, the founder's sons, Louis-André and Abraham Vacheron, took over the management of the company. The watchmaking dynasty of his son Louis-André ended in the early 1830s, and the management of the company passed into the hands of Abraham, the sole heir. During the years of his administration, the House passed in 1810 to his son Jacques Barthélémi (grandson of the founder). Under Jacques Barthélémi, the production of more complicated pieces began. In 1819, a skilled fabric merchant named François Constantin, who had already worked in the watchmaking sector, joined the company. Constantin is the originator of the manufacturer's motto "do better if possible, and it is always possible."...
