Madonna with Child in blue and gold majolica, Liguria 17th century
The sculpture depicts the crowned Madonna seated on a cloud formation, holding the Child Jesus, also crowned, in her arms. It was probably intended for a domestic altar.
The sculptural group has vibrant colors in cobalt blue, yellow and ochre. The figure of the Madonna, wrapped in a blue cloak and wearing a yellow dress, sits on a base shaped like a cloud, a symbol of her celestial elevation. The Child is depicted nude, standing on his mother's knee, in a blessing attitude.
