Paolo Maria Antoniani (Milan 1735 Turin 1807) Port views with figures and vessels, pair of oil on canvas.
This refined pair of port views represents one of the most elegant expressions of Italian vedutismo of the late eighteenth century. Attributed to Paolo Maria Antoniani, a Lombard artist active between Milan and Turin, the works recount with a wealth of detail the daily life along the coasts: animated figures, merchants, fishermen and nobles move on marine backdrops populated by sailing boats, defense towers, classical ruins and fortified ports.
Antoniani constructs invented but plausible landscapes, immersed in a serene light and crossed by an air suspended between reality and idealization. The soft colors, the atmospheric rendering and the harmonious composition refer to the cosmopolitan taste of the time, sensitive both to the French model of Vernet and to the Venetian tradition.
Decorative but also contemplative works, a symbol of an era of exchanges, travels and new horizons.
