This refined pair of oil paintings on canvas, attributed to the 17th-century Lombard school, depicts sumptuous compositions of armor and ceremonial objects, theatrically arranged on damask drapes and precious velvets.
The carved, gilded and marbled wooden frames opulently frame the scenes, enhancing their celebratory and symbolic character. The attention to detail, the material rendering of metals and fabrics, and the scenographic composition recall the Lombard sensibility for realism and decoration, partly anticipating the grace and poise that will characterize the eighteenth-century taste.
In these still lifes of weapons, one captures a sense of vanitas and historical memory, in line with the Lombard tradition of representing objects as silent witnesses of power and glory. The whole conveys an austere elegance, where the strength of the subject merges with the delicacy of the execution.
