Description:
LA GALLERYA PRESENTS A PAIR OF WORKS BY THE MASTER PIETRO MORANDO 1930s/40s, ALSO SOLD SEPARATELY TEMPERA ON PAPER H 55 CM X W 45 CM Born in the Orti district of Alessandria, he attended high school in his hometown. He spent his entire life in his hometown, taking long trips to France and overseas. He sporadically studied at the Albertina Academy in Turin; a scholarship (1913) allowed him to enroll in painting courses at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. He met Angelo Morbelli, whose studio he visited and with whom he temporarily shared a passion for divisionism. Pietro Morando, "fatally struck" charcoal on paper glued to canvas 35x56cm His love for drawing led him to produce numerous works, even using the meager means available during the First World War. He thus created tragic war drawings (almost a reportage) that were later published in the volume "I Giganti", with a presentation by the sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi from Casale Monferrato. For decades he frequented the Milanese studio of Carlo Carrà, with whom he shared, in addition to friendship, also cultural discussions and exchanges in the field of painting. He distinguished himself for his simple and incisive style and intense color and decisive strokes, with which he gave strength and life, but also poetry, to his subjects, almost always the poor people, porters and farmers, as well as the views of his city and the Monferrato countryside. He exhibited at the Promotrice in Turin from 1920 and participated in the Rome Quadriennale and the Milan Triennale. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1924, 1926, 1928, 1932, 1934, 1948, 1950, 1956. The exhibitions at the Promotrice in the 1950s were held together with the younger Alessandrian Franco Sassi, a pupil of Bozzetti and a great admirer of the painter in question. Morando's works are located at the Italian Historical War Museum in Rovereto as well as at the civic art gallery of Alessandria.
