The painting depicts the moving scene of Christ's agony and derives from a passage in the Gospel of Luke (22:43-44[1]) in which Jesus prays alone in a field called the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives. After leaving the apostles in the upper room, he takes Peter, John, and James aside to withdraw into prayer, aware of the fate that awaits him. Abandoning even the three chosen disciples, he remains alone to pray. During prayer, he receives a visit from an Angel who offers him the bitter chalice of the Passion before his arrest following Judas' betrayal.
Jesus, assailed by human anguish, addresses a plea to the Father and says "thy will be done," finally accepting the torment and death on the cross.
This fundamental and controversial event in his life can be considered the beginning of the actual Passion of Christ.
