North Bohemia, Sudetenland, around 1830-35, Biedermeier period. Possibly Friedrich Egermann workshops. Rare fluorescent crystal chalice made with uranium salts (Annagruen), masterfully painted with floral motifs, enameled and gilded. Height 11.3 cm, width 8.5 cm. In perfect condition, including enamels and paint, without restorations.
The invention of uranium glass was by Josef Riedel, a great master, artist, and entrepreneur, nicknamed the King of Glass of the Jizera Mountains (Sudetenland, North Bohemia). The invention was dedicated to his companion Anna, who became his wife in 1840. Made in various shades from fluorescent green (Annagruen) to yellow (Annagelb). This type of fluorescent glass became very popular in 19th-century Europe. The first artifacts of this type, of refined workmanship, are very rare and sought after.
