This rare icon from the island of Crete depicts the beautiful image of the Virgin Mary breastfeeding her Child.
The Child approaches his Mother's breast with his mouth to receive her milk.
The Virgin is sumptuously dressed in a robe decorated with gold embroidery.
With her left hand she holds the Child, and with her right she opens her bodice.
Their faces turn towards the viewer, involving them in the scene.
The pictorial quality of this magnificent icon is of the highest level. It is an important example of Byzantine art graced by an evident Venetian influence that illuminates it with light and color.
It is also distinguished by its excellent state of preservation in relation to the period, in the absence of restorations or repainting.
