Central Germany, 16th century, sculptor from the immediate circle or possibly workshop of Hans Leinberger (1475/1480; † 1531 or shortly after). Important late Gothic lime wood sculpture, depicting a Pious Woman (Mary Magdalene), carrying the jar of ointments as a gift. The poignant work, from the 16th century, can be attributed to the immediate circle or the closest school of the great sculptor of the German late Gothic period. The work is in good condition and has not undergone any restoration or integration; small visible losses on the face and left hand. Remains of polychromy. The dating to the 16th century has also been confirmed by laboratory tests of molecular spectrography with attached documents. Cm. 70 height x 27 max. width. The severity of the facial expression and the softness of the pose and clothing bring the work very close to the figure of the great sculptor of the German Renaissance. Hans Leinberger, also Lemberger (* 1475/1480; † 1531 or shortly after) was a skilled late Gothic sculptor from old Bavaria and one of the most important sculptors and carvers of his time. Leinberger worked on wood, metal and stone for the curia and the monarchy. Important works of his are preserved in some churches of Bavaria and at the Bayrisches Nationalmuseum in Munich. Some skilled artists of the 16th century Bavarian operated alongside him and were inspired by his work. An important adjudication for a work similar to the one we proposed was carried out by the Im Kinsky auction house in Vienna on October 18, 2017 at lot 311.
