The canvas, of remarkable scenic effect, depicts the Virgin Mary, assumed body and soul into celestial glory.
The Immaculate Mother of God is supported by a group of Angels with outstretched wings and carried into the Heavens, illuminated by the light of the Holy Spirit's Dove.
Her left foot protrudes from the clouds and crushes the head of the serpent that still has the apple of original sin in its mouth.
It is a painting of great charm, with the typical characteristics of private devotion and therefore particularly pleasing, thanks to the beauty of the figures and the splendid chromatism.
The extraordinary luminosity of the scene is accentuated by a remarkable use of chiaroscuro with perfect contrasts between light and shadow and an excellent combination of complementary colors.
It is an excellent example of Genoese Baroque painting, always exuberant but of great elegance, where Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627 – 1703) distinguished himself in religious subjects among the various interpreters.
The author of our work draws fully from the refined art of Piola and stands out for a particularly lively and very interesting pictorial technique thanks to the choice of the chromatic range, where the unusually pink-colored sky creates an atmosphere of great charm.
In fact, the result obtained by the decisive detachment between the warm light, evocative of a heavenly message, which radiates the sky and the lively composition of the protagonist figures, where the cold colors of blue, white and gray that outline the clouds and the garments of the Virgin, is truly exceptional.
The work is in excellent condition, already cleaned and professionally relined, and is inserted in a beautiful carved and gilded frame.
