Central Italy, 15th century
Madonna Sedes Sapientiae
Wood, 94 x 43 x 16 cm
The sculpture in question depicts a Madonna with Child attributable to a manufactory operating in the area of Central Italy in the fifteenth century.
The work, of very high sculptural quality, appears to be a perfect combination of tradition and innovation: while the frontally hieratic pose of the Virgin remains, the massive Romanesque forms are cleverly tempered, leaving room for a soft and pure line, which shapes the body and the clothes, giving the features a grace and elegance, rarely found in contemporary works.
The Madonna Sedes Sapientiae is a common theme in Christian art, depicting the Virgin Mary sitting on a throne intended as the seat of Wisdom. The main passage of Scripture in which the title of Seat of Wisdom is alluded to is taken from the II Book of Chronicles (chapter IX), where the magnificent throne of Solomon is minutely described. This throne is a stupendous image of what the Mother of God offered in her person to the Incarnate Word. In the Bible, Wisdom is attributed to the Word, which has fully manifested it in its incarnation: "In her and of her the Word made himself a throne" - as St. Bernard says: In ipsa et ex ipsa comparavit sibi thronum.
This image is often used to symbolize Mary's role as Mother of God, in all her wisdom and power to intercede for humanity. The Madonna Sedes Sapientiae is a popular image because it speaks of the deep devotion that many Christians have for Mary; it is a kind of reminder of her role as loving mother, wise teacher and powerful intercessor.
The face expresses a solemnity and sacredness that attracts the faithful, enraptured by the humanity and the sense of motherhood that the sculptor has managed to instill in the wood. It is therefore a poetic synthesis between tradition and novelty, between a popular devotion and a more refined elegance, which not surprisingly, has made statues, such as the one in question, objects of centuries-old devotion and today particularly sought after by collectors.
