The examined canvas depicts a glimpse of coastal life. The fishermen, in the foreground at low tide, are engaged in various activities, while the boats are beached on a sandbank. The beauty of the landscape, the coastal subject and the attention to atmospheric and realistic details refer to the typical painting of Achille Dovera (1838-1895). A Milanese painter, trained at the Brera Academy, where he was a student of Hayez, he had a particular predilection for historical and Risorgimento subjects at the beginning of his career. He then turned his attention to landscape painting, becoming an esteemed and recognized interpreter. The painting examined here fits perfectly into the repertoire of works that the artist exhibited at period exhibitions: landscapes, seascapes and views, both Italian and foreign. From the available monographic material, the presence of Dovera in France since around 1865 is evident; he painted scenes of Normandy regularly from 1871 to 1895. The scene, plausibly set on the north coast of France, agrees well with the above and allows us to hypothesize its creation in this temporal context. The artist continuously participated in various exhibitions, such as the Genoese Promotrice or the National Exhibition of Naples, or the events in Milan, Turin and Venice.
The chromatic choices are based on shades of blue and pink, as is typical of his works, which intertwine in the sky illuminated by the light of dawn and on the surface of the sea, where the sky and the surrounding coasts are reflected.
