Edward William Wyon (1811 - 1885)
Pair of Putti
Marble bas-relief, diam. cm 18.5
Signed on the base
The examined elegant marble tondo, depicting two sweet figures of children, is to be connected to the production of Edward William Wyon (1811 - 1885).
Son of Thomas Wyon the Elder (1767-1830), an English engraver who became chief engraver of seals, he has two brothers Benjamin Wyon, a seal engraver and medallist, and Thomas Wyon the Younger, also a medallist and engraver for the royal mint; he became famous as a designer of tokens for the Bank of England and Ireland and for coins for the British colonies and for Hanover.
Edward William Wyon, on the other hand, departs from the family tradition; he studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1829, becoming a sculptor and regularly participating in the Academy's exhibitions from 1831 to 1876. As a sculptor and engraver, he specialized in the creation of busts, especially portraits, but also in small, finely sculpted medallions, which often depicted children or playing putti, appealing to the aesthetic delicacy favored by Victorian taste, as happens in the present tondo. He also worked for Wedgwood, an English fine ceramics factory based in Staffordshire, creating designs to be reproduced on various products.
Many of his works, as in this specimen, feature a small bronze engraving applied on the back, certifying its authenticity.
The object is in a good state of preservation
