Originally from Marseille, Lacroix's early paintings featured extensive native seascapes, titled Italian Port at Dawn and Italian Port at Sunset. Attracted by the charm of the territory, rich in design ideas, the artist moved to the city of Rome in 1754. He then visited Naples three years later, being influenced by colleagues of the caliber of Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-1788), Marco Ricci (1676-1729/30) and Adrien Manglard (1695-1760) with Joseph Vernet (1714-1789), passing through Italy at that chronological height. Despite the subsequent transfer to Paris, Lacroix vowed fidelity to Italian landscapes, continuing to produce seascapes with generally fantastic architecture and signing in various ways with different names.
The artist was active alongside Vernet for a long time, especially during the Roman period, in the city for about twenty years.
Like Poussin and Lorrain, Lacroix distinguished himself for the ability to juggle careful atmospheric phenomena, to which he always dedicated up to two-thirds of the painting. He exhibited at the Colisée salon in 1776, which introduced him to the Parisian Salon de la Correspondance in the years 1780 and 1782.
His works were widely reproduced thanks to the engravings of Le Veau and Le Mire. Today, several of his paintings are held at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, the Dijon Museum of Art, and the National Museum in Stockholm.
