He attended the Albertina Academy in Turin, a student of C. Arienti. Passionate about ancient and medieval history and literature, he drew the subjects that permanently characterized his production (Domitianus Caesar Augustus Imperator, 1865, Turin, Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna). Still as a student of the Turin institute, he made his debut at the Promotrice in Turin in 1851 (Ovid's departure for exile), while in 1855 his Samaritan (1853) was presented at the Paris Salon. Soon after, he settled in Florence, where he was linked in friendship with M. Gordigiani and where he was certainly in contact with the young Tuscan painting. In 1861 he was in Paris and sent Fra Benedetto illuminator, one of the themes of monastic life that will frequently inspire subsequent production (Amanuensis del Convento di Montecassino, 1866, Turin, Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna), together with Venetian subjects, born from repeated trips to the lagoon city (The Venetian flower girl on the day of the Marie festival, exhibited at the Turin Promotrice in 1868). His accurate and conventional painting was able to skillfully treat even landscape motifs and, in later years, religious themes (The relics of Golgotha, presented at the International Exhibition of Rome in 1883).
