Antique wooden Christ CORPUS CHRISTI - 17th century.
Body of Christ in carved wood.
The figure of the Savior is depicted with arms open and extended diagonally, the head is reclined slightly backward to the right and looks upward with open eyes and a slightly parted mouth; the torso is bent forward in the pose of Christus Patiens (Suffering Christ), manifesting serenity in the relief of death, while the body seems to yield forward, inert, and abandons itself, weighing on slightly bent knees.
The soft hair falls on the shoulders.
The left hand has some missing parts, the feet are close together, and the palms of the hands show the stigmata in wood. The private parts are covered by a short loincloth.
The state of preservation is good; three fingers (index, middle, and pinky) of the left hand are missing, the left arm is not fixed, and the right arm needs to be further secured to adhere better.
The work is dated around the beginning of the 17th century, a period in which popular religiosity was expressed with a strong pathetism and emotional involvement.
The description of the physical details, such as the hair, eyes, mouth, and hands, contributes to creating an atmosphere of deep contemplation and spirituality; these details contribute to conveying the humanity and divinity of Jesus, emphasizing his sacrifice.
