The scene of "Golgotha" is depicted here with the presence of all the characters described by the Gospels under the Cross. The position of the protagonists is the traditional one, which sees the beloved Apostle John standing on the right, Mary Magdalene kneeling at the foot of Christ and the Mother lying to the right of the Cross with her hands clasped and her gaze turned towards her Son. Behind the Virgin, half-hidden in shadow, the Virgin's Sister and Mary of Cleophas can be glimpsed, completing the group of "Pious Women."
Two pairs of little angels in flight on either side of Jesus enliven the upper part of the composition. From their bright eyes fall tears that provoke emotion in the viewer.
The body of Christ, at the center of the scene, is of great impact with a marked anatomy, highlighted by the chiaroscuro and the contrast with the almost nocturnal context.
The dark background, in fact, enhances the figures struck by a frontal light that illuminates the faces and the brightly colored and particularly pleasing clothes.
The large canvas was painted by a Flemish Master in the first part of the 17th century and respects the typical type of late Renaissance Nordic Crucifixions. The analogies with the contemporary works of Guido Reni and the Carracci are also clear and evident, testimony to the strong influence that the Emilian school of the 17th century exerted on Flemish masters
The work is complete with an important antique black lacquered frame with a gilded profile.
