Emilian school, 17th century, Rebecca at the well  Translated
Description:
Emilian School, 17th Century Rebecca at the Well Oil on canvas, 76 x 58 cm After the death of his wife Sarah, Abraham decides to find a wife for his son Isaac. Therefore, he sends his servant Eliezer to Mesopotamia, their land of origin, in search of a young woman to give him as a wife who would share their roots. During a stop at the well of the city of Harran, Eliezer meets a young woman named Rebecca who readily offered him water from her amphora. Abraham's servant understands that she is the maiden sent by the Lord and offers her jewels as a pledge of marriage with Isaac. The painting in question stages the biblical story (Genesis 22:23) in the shade of the branches of a tree. Placed at the center of the canvas is Rebecca, dressed in a long blue dress and a mauve-colored drape, while resting her amphora on the edge of the well. In the background, another woman watches the scene curiously, probably lingering on Eliazer, who is not depicted in the painting. The elegant movements of the figure with her head delicately tilted, the rendering of the complexions, the silkiness of the color, the preciousness of the chromatic range make it plausible to place the painting in the context of Emilian painting.
