This fascinating 17th-century painting from the Roman school was executed by a talented painter active in mid-17th century Rome, linked to the historical and mythological painting of Alessandro Turchi, known as l'Orbetto (Verona 1578 - Rome 1649), probably a follower who draws on his compositions and worthy of further study.
The scenographic arrangement of the figures in the foreground is beautiful, with measured postures that direct the viewer's attention towards the central part where a woman lies surrounded by four handmaidens who have come to her aid.
In the background, among the trees of a grove, two other figures witness the scene, while in the background a rocky landscape with a village stands out in a twilight atmosphere.
The canvas measures 133 x 100, while the dimensions including its gilded and sanded Roman frame, contemporary to the painting, are 160 x 123.
The painting has been recently cleaned and relined by a restoration laboratory with whom we have been collaborating for years.
We attach a historical certificate of authenticity to the sale.
