The scene depicts three people sitting around a table outside the tavern smoking pipes illuminated by the light of a candle, while the tavern keeper with a jug in his hand climbs the steps leading inside, where a group of people are warming themselves by the fireplace. Frame in molded wood, water-gilded with silver on bole preparation, mecca gilding.
The painting shows an inscription on the wall behind the figures sitting at the table, not yet deciphered, which could plausibly be the author's signature.
