"Resurrection and Descent into Hell of Christ"
Flemish Master
Oil on copper
Antwerp, late 16th century
Dimensions: 45 x 35 cm; frame: 55 x 45 cm
Excellent condition
A splendid work painted on copper, rare and of great charm.
The subject is, in fact, almost impossible to find in ancient European art, while it was one of the favorite themes of Orthodox art, especially in Russian icons.
The best depictions of this extraordinary episode, where Christ defeats death and symbolizes the triumph of Christianity, are produced by Flemish Masters between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Artists of Antwerp, including Jacob de Backer and Frans Francken, stand out in particular. The Author of this very interesting copper panel, an excellent example of late 16th-century Flemish Mannerism, should be placed within their circle.
