Bartolomeo Gennari was born in Cento in 1594, son of Benedetto and Giulia Bovi.
At a very young age, he entered the workshop of Guercino, which already belonged to his father, working together with his brother Ercole, Lorenzo Gennari, Benedetto Zallone, Matteo Loves, and Paolo Antonio Barbieri.
Throughout his career, he made numerous copies of originals by the master. He most likely participated in the works of Casa Pannini.
In 1630, he took the place of Lorenzo Gennari as head of the workshop and always remained faithful to the master's style.
In 1632, he went to Modena with Guercino and Matteo Loves to execute portraits of Duke Francesco I d'Este and Maria Farnese. Starting in the 1630s, he began a thriving production of his own works, including the Marriage of the Virgin (1644, Modena, Galleria Estense) which testifies to his interest in the production of Guido Reni.
After moving to Bologna in 1644 with the other members of the family, he died in 1661.
