Salomon Adler (Gdansk, Poland 1630 - Milan 1709) "Self-Portrait with Lute" oil on canvas.
cm 119x96
The earliest evidence regarding Adler is that of F. M. Tassi, when he wrote that Fra Galgario completed his training under the guidance of a "Monsieur Salomone of the Herr of Andegavia" who "had at that time gained fame in Milan as an excellent painter".
The surname of Adler has been attributed to the painter due to the presence of an inscription behind a self-portrait preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera.
A self-portrait is preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan and one at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and other portraits in Lombard collections.
Adler could be identified with the Solomon of Gdansk mentioned in the eighteenth century by the Royal Gallery of Florence as active in Milan at the end of the seventeenth century.
His style reveals influences of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn.
