BIOGRAPHY

Born in Rheinberg, Germany, Hein Hoppmann already at the age of 10 showed a fascination for painting. He attended the German School of Fine Arts in Berlin and the Academy of Fine Arts also in Berlin. He studied oil painting with the palette knife technique from Michi Bibi in Munich. He went on to have exhibitions in Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Munich, Vienna, Amsterdam and New York. His first exhibitions around 1922 consisted of drawings and watercolours. From 1937 onwards, he only used the spatula technique. His subjects were numerous: landscapes, architecture, cities, ships, ports, workers, musicians, interiors, old men, etc.

Many of his works from 1930 to 1944 have understandably disappeared or been destroyed. And with the Second World War came a noticeable darkening in the color palette…his paintings became dramatically dark, punctuated with dots of color that appear to glow. He was a master of almost all artistic mediums.

Hein Hoppmann was the subject of a book by Dr. Hatto Kuffman; Hein Hoppmann "A painter between tradition and autonomy". Painter Hein Hoppmann's works are part of major company collections worldwide, including the private collection of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.

Portnoy Galleries has been selected by the Hoppmann family estate as the exclusive representative of his work in the United States.
