Description:
Painting by Carmelo Cappello, "Study for figure of woman," signed. Splendid study by the famous sculptor Carmelo Cappello, depicting a seated woman, certainly used for a sculpture by the artist. Drawing Watercolor and Indian ink Tempera/paper Dimensions: In frame H 48 x W 54 x D 5 cm / H 25.5 x W 22 cm BIOGRAPHY The sculptor Carmelo Cappello was born in Ragusa in 1912. From a young age he worked for a Sicilian cart manufacturer. He attended the Comiso School of Art in 1928, then from the following year he was in Rome at Ettore Colla's atelier. He settled in Milan in 1930 and took evening classes at the Castello Sforzesco. Thanks to a scholarship, he then follows Marino Marini's teaching at Monza. He truly debuted with his sculpture in 1937 and had his first Solo Exhibition in Rome the following year. Carmelo Cappello will participate in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale, the Rome Quadrennial and the Milan Triennial; in 1959, he will be invited to Documenta 2 in Kassel. Carmelo Cappello will be the greatest interpreter of "Spatialism" in the field of sculpture. In 1977, the artist participated in the adventure of Coopertarte, a cooperative of artists who sought to explore new forms of relationship and dialogue with the public (Alviani, Nangeroni, Nigro, Perilli, Rotella, Turcato, etc.). After an initial figurative period, Carmelo Cappelo will be drawn to the work of Henry Moore, then to the Russian constructivism of Tatline; he ends up focusing his attention on space as the works of Brancusi, Pevsner or Gabo suggest to him. Cappello's work can be found in places (squares or museums) of worldwide prestige. The artist died in Milan in 1996.  Translated
