Venus and Adonis

The small sculpture entitled Venus and Adonis depicts the goddess in a tender embrace with her beloved. Adonis was a handsome and charming young man who dedicated his free time to hunting. One day Venus, while watching him stroll in the woods, was accidentally scratched by one of Cupid’s arrows, falling instantly into deep infatuation. The strong passion between the two aroused the anger of Mars, the god of war, who, in order to have his beloved all to himself again, devised a very simple plan: he would transform himself into a boar and inflict a mortal blow on Adonis. This is what happened. During a hunting trip, young Adonis encountered the animal, which in reality concealed the features of Mars, who mortally wounded him. The lamentations of her beloved reached the ears of Venus, who rushed to his bedside and tried in vain to save him, but Adonis, now dead, had no choice but to descend into the underworld.
Venus's despair was such that the powerful Zeus, moved to pity, allowed the two lovers to reunite: every spring Adonis could return to the world of the living to embrace his beloved Venus and spend part of the year with her; but, with the arrival of the first cold weather, Adonis would have to return to the darkness of death.
The sculpture represents a moment of profound intimacy and tenderness between the two young people, the moment captured is that of a tender embrace where Adonis touches the face of his beloved with his fingers while the goddess languidly abandons her head towards her lover's shoulder, in an intense play of glances.
