"Allegory of Avarice"
Oil on canvas
First half of the 18th century
Beautiful antique "Guilloche" frame
Canvas size: 46 x 36 cm; Frame size: 76 x 66 cm
Excellent condition
A virile portrait of extraordinary intensity depicting an old man with a penetrating gaze and glassy eyes.
He holds a gold coin in his right hand.
The figure creates a certain disturbance and is well suited to impersonating Avarice.
It is undoubtedly a work by the famous Venetian portraitist Giuseppe Nogari, who distinguished himself in the 18th century for his depictions of elderly figures, always described with exceptional realism.
Unfortunately, paintings of modest quality that feature subjects from his repertoire are often attributed to this great author.
In our case, the painting's paternity is established by the presence of all the pictorial and expressive characteristics of the portrayed figure and by the truly extraordinary quality.
Adding even more interest to the painting is the peculiarity of the subject and the great ability to perfectly depict Avarice with the stern appearance of the Old Man clutching the coin.
The painting is complete with a beautiful black lacquered guilloché frame with tortoiseshell reserves.
