ALTAR OR PROCESSIONAL CANOPY (New Entry) (with wooden sculpture of Madonna and Child)  Translated
Description:
A unique canopy made of soft wood, carved with volutes along the entire oval, where six beautiful roses are placed, alternating between simple ones and others with small buds, carved, painted in white and gold, adorned with golden leaves. The seventh rose, placed at the top, was probably broken in the past (you can still see the petals of the base of the flower, the buds, and the leaves) and a sort of "support" was added to hang rosary beads from. The back is also very particular, where 27 (XXVII) Roman numerals are carved on the wood corresponding to small slits into which the "rays of the Sun" in gilded wood were placed, completely surrounding the canopy. Some later wooden additions and handle. The base of the canopy is very elegantly shaped and finely carved with Acanthus leaves* and gilded decorative motifs. A procession is unimaginable without the presence of a canopy, which gives greater symbolic value, in addition to being often beautiful to look at and gives further sacredness and honour to the religious event. Italy, Emilia Romagna: second half of the 19th century Measurements of the canopy: height cm. 100 depth cm. 48 width cm. 60 *In the language of flowers and plants, Acanthus represents prestige and material well-being because in the past it was used to adorn the clothes of the most illustrious people. But it is also considered the symbol of virginity because it is a spontaneous plant that is born and grows in uncultivated lands.
