Antique print by Giovanni Fosella.
Dimensions: total 88x64cm
The Madonna of the Baldachin. Madonna and Child enthroned with Saint Peter, Saint Bruno (or Saint Bernard), Saint James, Saint Augustine, and angels.
The print is considered the masterpiece of the engraver Giovanni Fosella, born in Arcola (La Spezia) and a pupil of Raffaello Granara at the Genoese Academy; in 1839, Fosella was in Florence, where he studied with Perfetti until 1842, and in 1869 he became a member of the Academy. It was for the engraving "The Madonna of the Baldachin" that the artist was awarded at the Italian Exhibition in Florence in 1861, which constitutes the ante quem term for its execution; the post quem term is 1855, the year in which Maria Adelaide, Queen of Sardinia, died (January 20), to whose memory the engraving is dedicated.
