Painting depicting a sweet Virgin with Child and the young Saint John the Baptist.
It is an interesting Flemish work from the school of Joos Van Cleve, featuring characteristics of his extraordinary painting.
The faces still retain Gothic features with distinct shading to round them out and give a sense of three-dimensionality.
The strong colors with warm and vibrant hues are part of the repertoire of the great Master of Antwerp.
The representation of the two Children is also typical of his works.
The style of the figures is highly reminiscent of the somatic details of 15th-century Tuscan paintings, from which Van Cleve was strongly influenced.
The representation of the Italian-style Renaissance palace might suggest a work made in Italy by a Flemish author trained in the Antwerp workshop.
Indeed, many Nordic masters were attracted by the beauties of our cities and their artistic heritage, undertaking study trips to Italy, with many of them settling there permanently.
The canvas is in good condition, and the main figures have not undergone any retouching, maintaining all their beauty intact, which is very rare for canvas works of this era.
The large palace in the background is also untouched, without any repainting.
The colors of the painting have remained very vivid and intense, highlighting the beautiful sfumato effects and the marked chiaroscuro.
