"Penitent Saint Jerome" --------- Giovanni de Vecchi (Sansepolcro 1536-Rome 1615) ---------- Oil on panel --------- Dimensions 62 x 45 ------------ Second half of the 16th century ---------- This important work, evidently of remarkable quality, immediately strikes for its impressive force and for the emotional charge transmitted by the Saint. -------- It is a powerful and potent Saint Jerome who clutches the stone to punish himself with anger in the moment of maximum penance. --------- The charisma of the Saint, one of the 4 Doctors of the Church, is expressed with truly extraordinary vigor. --------- The author is stimulated precisely by the strongly hieratic personality of this Saint who uniquely expresses Sacredness and Devotion. ----------- The panel is the work of the Roman painter Giovanni de Vecchi, probably the design for the "Saint Jerome" preserved in Rome in the Church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli (See photo), or a replica executed by the Master for private devotion -------------. Although with even significant variations, especially in the bright and vibrant colors, the analogy with the altarpiece painted in honor of the important Delfino family of Rome, to which the chapel of San Girolamo is entitled, is evident ----------- The conditions of our panel are excellent in relation to the era, excluding a disfigurement to the Saint's face and some breaks to the edges of the panel.
