Frederic Remington
Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861-1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer. His production is based on the representation of Far West landscapes and its protagonists, cowboys, American Indians, and the U.S. Cavalry.
Born in Canton, New York, he devoted his youth to horse riding, attended Yale University, and later became an employee in Albany. He was a businessman in Kansas City and married Eva Caden in 1884. He studied art in New York and collaborated with well-known magazines.
He became famous for his landscapes of the West, although he had visited them few times. He corresponded with William Randolph Hearst during the Spanish-American War and took part in the Battle of San Juan Hill. Remington's works are kept in private collections and in American museums, such as the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington or the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth.
The bronze sculpture is distinguished by the particular rendering of the bronze, modeled to make the territory steep and rugged traversed by the horse. Characteristic details are, for example, the rifle carried with nonchalance or the fringes of the leather dress.
