The elegant portrait in question depicts a carefully dressed gentleman, caught in his domestic everyday life, sitting next to a small table, with the pen in his hand and slightly pressed on some sheets placed on a wooden writing desk. The determined gaze, directed at the observer, and the refined pose identify the portrait as "official", i.e. commissioned for a private or public use, but through which the social relevance of the portrayed person should transpire. From this point of view, the work perfectly follows the conventions of 19th-century portraiture, aimed at sharing the private life of the exponents of the upper middle class. The environment in which the intellectual is inserted is also meticulously described: the refined floor, the small footstool on which the man rests his shiny shoe, the paintings hanging on the walls, and the sumptuous red curtains that frame the entrance of the room are striking. The deep and vivid expression of the portrayed person, rendered with great psychological introspection and defined in the most subtle nuances, is striking: the slightly arched eyebrows, the straight nose, the rosy cheeks, the thin mouth. The result is a carefully defined work both in the composition, and in the individual details and in the color combinations.
