Beautiful Russian icon depicting the Transfiguration, one of the most fascinating and significant episodes in the life of Christ.
In addition to the usual six characters that the scriptures describe as protagonists of the scene, there is a small icon of the Virgin and Child in the upper border.
The panel, enriched by the most widespread iconographic image, becomes very interesting as well as rare and gives the possibility to venerate the Virgin together with Christ with his three favorite Apostles (Peter, John and James) and the two most important Prophets (Elijah and Moses).
The icon is in excellent condition in relation to the period and the characters, painted in an excellent manner, stand out from the rocky background with a remarkable three-dimensional effect. They are all facing towards the central figure of Jesus blessing. Only James, below, turns away, blinded by the Divine light.
