Cerofori angels - Sienese sculptor of the late 16th-early 17th century
Description:

In polychrome and gilded wood

Siena, late 16th-early 17th century

100 x 32 x 21 cm

Excellent state of conservation.

Standing portraits of the two cerophoric angels are characterized by the strong gestures of the arms.

The draperies are rich and elaborate, often curled in flourishes that simulate a light flight and everywhere drawn by deep folds with strongly raised edges: on the arms and legs the garments adhere and stretch, suggesting anatomies of firm plasticity.

Very beautiful are the details of the sleeves, whose lapels are fixed by applications / jewel, as well as the button-gem in the center of the round neckline

The features of the face are sweet, underlined by skilful colors and synthetic touches of color.

The head is surrounded by a vegetal crown under which the hair swells in curly locks.

The figures rest on two elegant rectangular bases decorated on the sides by volutes and in the center by a cherub head.

Of great elegance and executive quality, the two angels are certainly attributable to the Sienese area of the late sixteenth century early seventeenth century, in favor of this hypothesis, the great assonance of our works with sculptural groups of the same subject made in this geographical area , (see for example those of the Cathedral of Siena, sculpted by Beccafumi) and certain fifteenth-century influences and recoveries that date back to the tradition of Giovanni di Stefano, Francesco di Giorgio Martini and Giacomo Cozzarelli.

Provenance: Carlo De Carlo collection
