The figurative tradition representing Christ with his hands chained dates back to the early Middle Ages, when an iconography of His sorrows widely spread. The need to translate the Passion into images aimed at raising awareness of the forgiveness for all men, resulting from the Crucifixion.
In this painting, the moment before the hearing before Pilate is depicted. Christ has not yet been cruelly mocked by the soldiers, although he is already wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe: he does not yet show the wounds due to the beatings. A man, with a typical oriental turban, looks at the viewer revealing the tied hands of the Redeemer, simultaneously inviting a silent reflection on the destiny that is about to be fulfilled. The entire work is imbued with an intimate spirit of contemplation, enhanced by the dark background on which the illuminated, and above all enlightening, Christ stands out.
