Rest during the Flight into Egypt
Oil on canvas, 42 x 33 cm – Frame 65 x 55 cm
This Holy Family, with its organized composition exemplified as resting from the flight into Egypt, is arranged within a shaded bucolic backdrop, a natural and silent scenographic setting. Saint Joseph, shown in collected relaxation, seems to trace in his figure the parallel and evocative half-column caressed by a glimmer of sunlight, piercing through the shadowy woodland idyll.
The foreground group of the Virgin with the Child and Saint John the Baptist is framed in a pyramidal scheme that resolves the affectionate embrace of the Mother to the older child and the gestures linked both to everyday life, in the Madonna's legs stretched out on the ground or in the restless pose of the Baby Jesus, and to sacredness in the praying pose of the little Baptist.
The canvas, with typical dimensions related to private devotion, recognizes in the composition and stylistic comparisons the hand of an Emilian painter active in the first half of the 17th century, aware of contemporary pictorial productions and influenced by the works of, for example, Ippolito Scarsella, known as lo Scarsellino (1550-1620), rather than by the examples of Albani and Domenichino.
