17th century, Marche region
Decorated box
Lacquered wood, 25.5 x 52 x 28.5 cm
Original lock
The box represents a refined example of lacquered wood furniture, which is part of the tradition of 17th-century furniture from the Marche region. From the charm and beauty of the first lacquered furniture, seen or imported from the Orient, the art of Italian lacquered furniture was born, so much so that the first examples created were very similar to the models - the so-called chinoiseries - and then deviated and obtained their own autonomous stylistic figure. In Italy, to create lacquered furniture, Swiss pine or Cirmolo pine is worked, light and suitable for lacquering, or walnut for more valuable works, with layers of glue and plaster finished with fine sandpaper, and then decorated with plant and plant-like motifs. Lacquered furniture is a privilege of the wealthy classes and its decoration is often influenced by great works of art, so much so that sometimes the artists employed in the decoration of palace rooms are also asked to produce cartoons for the decoration of lacquered furniture.
