ANCIENT BRONZE SCULPTURES, WARRIOR AND LION, BARYE, FRENCH SCULPTOR. (STB39)  Translated
Description:
(STB39) The Bronze Sculpture of Warrior With Spear and Lion is from the second half of the 19th century. Original 19th-century patina. Author Antoine Louis Barye (1795-1875), an important French sculptor, Barye was born in Paris in 1795 and is famous for his animal sculptures, sculptures that he would update. The son of a goldsmith, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1818 and worked as an apprentice in the studio of the sculptor François Joseph Bosio and the painter Jean-Antoine Gros. With his friend Delacroix, he regularly visited the menagerie of the Museum of Natural History to study and observe animals. It was in 1831 that Barye became known to the general public. Preferring bronze to marble, which he considered too cold, the artist multiplied statuettes and small groups of animals that he himself cast and chased. Barye died at the age of 95, leaving behind a vast production of drawings, watercolors, and paintings, as well as sculptures and silverware. His works can be seen in the Louvre and Orsay museums.
