Armando Testa is one of the most important advertising graphic designers of the 20th century, both Italian and international, remembered for his brilliant ideas that contributed significantly to the development of the visual culture during the years of the economic boom and Pop art.
In 1978 Studio Testa became Armando Testa S.p.A., opening offices in Milan, Rome and abroad in the following years and it is in these years that some of the most intriguing advertising creations came out, including the famous ones for the Esselunga supermarket chain which combine food and historical figures, or food and zodiac signs, or which propose a question about the image that could represent an animal, or food. In the one presented here, the phonetic assonance between the word "Babà" and "Babbo" (Dad) is leveraged, just like in the others available in the shop, each one more fun than the other.
Testa was one of the first to understand that advertising is an integral part of our lives: whether we like it or not, we are hammered by it at every hour of the day and night, and in many cases they take on the status of works of art historicized by critics.
