Wooden sculpture from the Gothic period depicting Mary Magdalene. -----
Flemish origin, city of Brussels ------
Period 1480 - 1520 ------
Carved oak wood ------
Height cm. 70 base cm. 20 -------
This very refined wooden sculpture depicting Mary Magdalene in a standing position and full figure, perfectly embodies the taste of Flemish Gothic art. ------
A scrupulous research has identified the exact area of production in the city of Brussels, as evidenced by some works with the same characteristics kept in the National Museum of the Middle Ages of Cluny in Paris and in the Royal Monastery of Brou. ------
The figure is standing, elongated in an emphatic way according to the most refined fifteenth-century dictates and is carved in the round. -------
The typically Medieval headdress accentuates the movement of the Saint who bends down to lower her face to express repentance. -------
In her right hand she holds the vase of ointments and her left rests on her body and holds the long clothes. --------
The natural movement of the garments is impeccably realized. --------
The long braids that descend to the sides of the breast are splendid. --------
The very hard oak wood is carved in one piece. -------
The work is in very good condition.
