This Neogothic style walnut dresser with plate rack is an authentic masterpiece of wooden microarchitecture, crafted by a skilled cabinet maker around 1880. Pinnacles and Gothic tracery enhance the monumentality of the piece, which, despite its considerable height of 283 cm, exudes elegance and refinement. The soft decorative lines, twisted columns and carved panels with floral motifs are details of great sophistication and finesse. To crown it all, a clock face is set into a simple wooden decoration. The revival of the medieval Gothic style during the 18th and 19th centuries was part of a general recovery of numerous styles of the past, but for some critics it was precisely the flamboyant fantasies of this style that inspired the lines of Art Nouveau. According to historical reconstructions, neo-Gothic furniture originated in the English area in the early eighteenth century. After the first half of the century, the neo-Gothic style became increasingly popular as a furniture decoration for noble residences of cultured collectors and, at the same time, also took hold in the architectural field. Around 1820 the neo-Gothic style was definitively established, especially in England and the European area, as well as in the United States, while the Italian production of the genre was sporadic. The maximum popularity of the style was reached in Trieste, where it remained fashionable until the first decades of the 20th century, and in the areas of northern Italy more directly in contact with German culture, where the revival found great public success. Gothic, with its European evolution into Flamboyant Gothic during the 15th and 16th centuries and the subsequent revival starting from the 18th century, is configured as a style that, perhaps more than others, could be defined as timeless. The Duomo of Milan is the best known example of the timeless interest in this style: construction started in 1386 in Gothic style and was completed during the 19th century, in full Gothic revival. The style is an expression of monumentality, prosperity and magnificence: it is well suited to noble residences.
It measures 283 cm in height, 285 cm in width and 70 cm in depth.
