EXTRAORDINARY LIFE-SIZE THIRTEENTH-CENTURY WOODEN CRUCIFIX - MASTERPIECE OF UMBRIAN AND ITALIAN ART
in softwood with traces of ancient polychromy
Height: 167 cm - Width: 128 cm - Depth: 30 cm
WORK FROM A MAJOR INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM
Exceptional sculpture in softwood, originally polychrome, datable to the end of the 14th century and of life-size dimensions.
The crown of thorns deeply embedded in the head, the arms and torso shifted forward, the head itself very large in relation to the emaciated body with pronounced bony protrusions, are typical elements of Gothic-Medieval sculpture from Central Italy. These fascinating Crucifixes, also called "Franciscan" to remember the Poor Man of Assisi who was its promoter and forerunner, were simply placed against the wall where it was customary to paint the Cross. The bare and, at times, crude dramatization of the theme, the sense of profound piety (from the Latin "pietas", in the Christian sense) that pervades the observer, the Body of Christ with a gaunt and wizened appearance dried up by suffering, the modeling so realistic as to make the material "alive", make the work extraordinary and truly unique for the emotional impact and the sense of archaic devotion that distinguishes it. The "subject" of the work (Jesus on the Cross), of absolute sacredness, is here very close to the extreme quality of the "object" (i.e. the masterful sculptural work), an evident harbinger of a Renaissance to come.
In excellent condition and originality.
Life-size measurements and proportions.
Extreme rarity and very high school
Umbrian art - late 1300s (14th century)
