Michele Antonio Rapos (Turin, 1733-1819) Still life with flowers and fruit, 1760-1770 Oil on canvas, 90 x 119 cm. Unpublished. SOLD A school of still life developed in the mid-eighteenth century to decorate the refined interiors of Turin's palaces, and Michele Antonio Rapos is recognized as its leader. The artist was born in Turin in 1733 and died there in 1819; he was the brother of the more famous Vittorio Amedeo and specialized in the genre of still lifes, finding favor both with the Savoy court, which often employed him for the Venaria Reale, Stupinigi, the Royal Palace of Turin, and with the subalpine nobility. Rapos's original still lifes possess peculiar characteristics, which make them easily identifiable; fruits include, as at Stupinigi, golden bunches of grapes, peaches, plums, pomegranates, cherries; among the flowers, often gathered in airy wicker baskets or in large vases of monumental shape, one can admire roses, large peonies, carnations, tulips.
