I have known indirectly for some time this superb pair of «battles» (oil paintings on canvas, 102 x 141 cm), already auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York in 1990, which I published in the volume I pittori di battaglie. Maestri italiani e stranieri del xvii e xviii secolo (Sestieri 1999, nn. 3-4, p. 483).
Two examples that I have since considered among the most representative of Spolverini's personality, as a battle painter, together with the two «Battaglie notturne di Fornovo» (Sestieri 1999, nn. 5-6), compared to which these can be considered a daytime transposition, offering us, however, a more complete sample of his ability to dynamically articulate vast masses of combatants, represented with a lucid objective rendering, highlighting some more salient episodes...
