The three important paintings by Gaetano Ottani, all unpublished, and in two cases dated and signed, with their precise chronological scan represent a summa of the artistic evolution of the excellent Bolognese painter's style.
The artist, trained at the Clementina Academy on the study of the works of Ferdinando Galli Bibiena and many other valid quadratists and painters of local architecture, had a long and singularly multifaceted career. In fact, he was a set designer, painter, musician and singer very much appreciated at the Italian level. Ottani began working as a set designer in Bologna in 1742, painting the architectures and perspectives for the drama Andromaca represented in that year at the Formagliari theater. In Bologna he also met Carlo Filippo Aliberti, a Turin artist and specialist in civil and theatrical architecture at the Savoy court and, in all probability, it was thanks to his interest that he decided to move to Turin.
