Bacchus as a Child Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627 – 1703) Oil on canvas Canvas cm. 71 x 90 Frame cm. 86 x 105 Excellent condition The painting depicts the child Bacchus, completely nude and lying with legs apart on a sheet, as he drinks from a flask held in his mouth with his right hand, assisted by a servant putto. The pagan deity is in a state of obvious intoxication, enraptured by the wine, with a smile of ecstasy on his face. The scene takes place outdoors with the naked bodies of the two protagonists well-lit in the foreground, in sharp contrast to the dark landscape and sky in the background. The canvas is enlivened by a richly decorated Medici vase with high-relief figures and a vibrant floral arrangement next to the little drinker. It is a most delightful 17th-century work, faithful to the traditional inclination of the Genoese school for this captivating type of subject, of which Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627 – 1703) was the principal exponent. The painting is attributable to the talented Master, who specialized precisely in allegorical, mythological, and religious scenes featuring putti, cherubic angels, and cherubic faces, always suitable for display in the luxurious palaces of the great Ligurian city.
